Wider market seen for Cummins V8 CGI diesel

Cummins Inc. is developing a version of the V8 Turbo Diesel for commercial vehicle customers and this could widen the application of the new diesel beyond the first application which is Nissan’s next-generation Titan pick-up truck.

To accommodate this, Cummins has said that its ‘historic’ Columbus Engine Plant (CEP) is being readied to build the new Cummins 5-litre V8 Turbo Diesel for Nissan's next-generation Titan, and will require additional personnel to fulfil the programme, though at this stage Cummins HR department is not revealing numbers.

"This is an exciting announcement for our Cummins team," said Tom Linebarger, chairman and chief executive officer of Cummins Inc. "We are bringing our innovation and latest technology in engines and after-treatment products to a new segment of customers. Importantly, this will help us grow our own business as well as allow us to help an important new partner, Nissan, succeed in the market."

Cummins breaks cover with CGI V8 diesel

It has now been confirmed the new Cummins 5-litre V8 diesel engine set to power the next generation Nissan Titan truck will carry a compacted graphite iron (CGI) cylinder block.

The news finally opens wide the door, letting in light to an otherwise darkened room. For up to now, Cummins has held tightly secret any information that it has been developing, alongside Nissan, the latest technology in diesel engine cylinder block design and manufacture. This news comes despite the engine company also working alongside the US Department of Energy on next generation diesels under a Federal-funded R&D programme.

For years, Cummins engineers have attended conference after conference, listening intently to lectures on advanced diesel engine technology. They have listened but yielded nothing by way of exchange. Advanced EA888 powers latest Golf R

The latest Golf R unveiled by Volkswagen has a more advanced version of the EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection 2-litre gasoline engine fitted to the new Golf GTI.

Compared to the 227bhp GTI engine, VW’s engineers have boosted power by 69bhp to 296bhp which is delivered at 5500rev/min, thus creating one of the most powerful four-cylinder production engines in the world.

Maximum torque has been increased by 22lbft to 280lbft which is now available over a broad speed band from 1800 to 5500rev/min. To attain this output, the Golf R's 1.984-litre engine was subjected to a motorsports-style development programme.

Green light for Cummins CGI diesel?

Nissan has announced it will offer a newly-developed Cummins V8 turbo diesel in its next generation full-size Titan pickup.

Now in the latter stages of development and testing, the available Cummins 5-litre V8 Turbo Diesel engine has been “optimized for the next generation Titan” as a result of the partnership between Cummins and Nissan. Cummins also is developing a version of the engine for its commercial vehicle customers.

The big question everyone is asking is: “Will the new V8 diesel carry the latest in cylinder block technology, namely a vee block cast in compacted graphite iron (CGI)?

Jaguar readies 4x4 for Frankfurt

Jaguar can wait not a second longer to roll out a 4x4 ‘cross-over’ as it lays plans to unfurl the wraps on a new concept vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, paving the way for production in 2016.

Jaguar has seen its competitors advance heavily into this territory and clearly wants a slice of the action.

The new arrival could pave the way for yet more diesel sales by the company but whether the new vehicle is fired by one of the Hotfire family of new engines to come from the as-yet unopened Wolverhampton engine plant (WEP) remains to be seen.

GM plans three new engine families by 2016

Between now and 2016, Vauxhall will introduce three completely new engine families and 13 new powertrains, renewing 80 per cent of its entire powertrain portfolio. Vauxhall, together with Opel, is part of General Motors in Europe.

Among the new engines is the new 1.6-litre SIDI turbo downsized units that are distinguished by high power density and refinement, combined with low fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. At the same time, numerous ultra-modern manual and automatic transmissions are being introduced.

A new a high-performance version of the new 1.6 SIDI turbo engine offering 200PS, 300Nm torque and a top speed of 146mile/hour is to make its world premiere in a Vauxhall Cascasda at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Vauxhall reveals modular engine family

Vauxhall has unveiled a new high-tech 1-litre three–cylinder gasoline engine in time for next month’s Frankfurt International Motor Show, ahead of its debut in the ADAM city car next year.

The 1-litre turbo petrol, known as SGE (small gasoline engine), represents a new benchmark for refinement in three-cylinder engines, according to Vauxhall, with noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics superior to many four cylinder units.

Developing 115PS, the new engine delivers a low-end torque of 166Nm from 1,800 to 4,700rev/min, belying its small size.
